Estellencs to Esporles - Sept 22
The trip from Palma to the Serra de Tramutana mountains is quite short. Within a short time the half million population in Palma leads to small villages - all filled with Dry Stone walls. Thousands and thousands of them as I will soon see.
First stop - Estellencs - population 300 and hanging over the Mediterranean Sea. My backpack needed to kneel for a quiet prayer at Ste Joan Baptist before heading out.
Head out of Estellencs and up into the mountains.
These mountains are absolutely filled with very old cisterns and dry stone walls - must be ancient yet so many well maintained. Clearly there is no frost in the ground here.
Stop in Banyalbufar ( 1/2 way today ) for a quick snack - there are gorgeous houses rimmed with dry stone terraces - all hanging over the sea.
…. and then a 1+ hour slog - straight up hill - with nary a flat foot of earth until I get to the top.
Then to Esporles. Really pretty village.
Some quick thoughts about building and using Dry Stone Walls.
Love that fence post held on by the hole reamed in the rock.
